The topic of trans-athletes is a complex and sensitive one that has captured attention across media and politics alike. The issues surrounding trans-athletes reveal much about society’s perception of transgender individuals and the unique challenges they face. As someone who has lived this reality, I want to offer a compassionate perspective, hoping to foster understanding and empathy in these often-heated discussions.

Trans-Athletes: Setting the Stage

In 2003, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) established guidelines for athletes who had undergone gender reassignment, aiming to create a fair playing field for all. While I don’t claim to be an expert on Title IX, I do feel the need to address the way certain athletes have recently taken advantage of this system. Over the past 21 years, isolated instances of abuse have surfaced, casting trans-athletes as “predators” or even as towering figures that “overpower” their cisgender peers. Sadly, this portrayal is exaggerated and unfair to the vast majority of transgender people who are invisible, honest, and hardworking.

Media and Politics: The Dangerous Impact of Trans-Phobia

Political campaigns frequently exploit this narrative, fueling trans-phobia and embedding these misrepresentations in the public consciousness. This climate of fear does not reflect the reality for most transgender individuals. It’s disheartening to see people who seek power resort to fear-mongering for their own political gain. This approach does more than misinform the public—it adds to the existing stigma, making it that much harder for the transgender community to live openly and authentically.

My Personal Transformation: A Journey of Courage and Resilience

As I approach the 30th anniversary of my transition, I’m reminded of my own journey. My upcoming book, set to release in June 2025, marks a milestone that I’m excited to share with you. Transitioning from male to female in 1995 was a monumental step in my life, but it was not without its own challenges. After transitioning, I struggled to find my purpose, hoping that becoming my authentic self would bring the happiness and acceptance I had always yearned for.

In many ways, my journey was one of survival, marked by my fight against gender dysphoria. I transitioned to escape the anguish of living in a body that didn’t align with my identity. However, I quickly realized that transitioning alone would not shield me from society’s expectations or judgments.

The Unexpected Road to Purpose

A tragic car accident ultimately changed the direction of my life. The collision forced me to pause and reflect deeply on my purpose. I meditated, seeking answers to what I was meant to do with my life. After weeks of contemplation, the answer I received surprised me: “golf.” At first, I was in disbelief. How could my life’s purpose be golf?

Nevertheless, I followed this calling. I dusted off my clubs and went to the Woodley Lakes Golf Club in Van Nuys, California. At that time, I was playing to an 8 or 9 handicap, but I began practicing diligently, allowing golf to become my daily focus and discipline. By June 1997, I was shooting at scratch level in local courses around Los Angeles, hoping to turn my skill into a teaching opportunity. Although acceptance was hard to come by in the traditionally male-dominated golf community, fate intervened when I met Chang Ahn, a range owner who offered me a teaching position without hesitation.

Finding Acceptance and Community

This opportunity marked a turning point. Despite the uphill journey, Chang saw me for my talent and passion, offering me a chance to build a new life and purpose around the sport. Every drive down the Sepulveda Pass felt like a step closer to self-acceptance. Golf, surprisingly, gave me a new platform to be seen, valued, and respected.

Reflections on the Path Forward

For me, the journey has been filled with both struggle and triumph, and it has taught me the value of resilience, courage, and authenticity. I know that many of you reading this may have faced rejection or fear in your own lives. My hope is that by sharing my story, I can help you see that transformation is not a single step but a continuous journey. By embracing your authentic self and following your own path, you can overcome life’s greatest challenges.

Stay tuned for more on my journey, and thank you for walking alongside me.

With love and courage,
Coach Karyn
